How the budget planner works

Enter your monthly take-home pay, the amount that actually lands in your account after tax. The planner splits it with the 50/30/20 rule: half for needs, 30% for wants and 20% for savings and paying down debt.

Add what you spend now on essentials and everything else, and it checks you against the rule and tells you how much is left to save each month.

What counts as a need?

Needs are the things you would keep paying if your income stopped tomorrow: housing, utilities, groceries, insurance, transport to work and minimum debt payments. Everything you would cancel within a week is a want.

What if my essentials are over 50%?

That is common in expensive cities, and it does not mean you are failing. Shift the split to 60/20/20 and protect your savings first, by cutting wants before savings. The full guide explains the alternatives.
